A frequent stop for us when we’re in Ensenada and in need of an afternoon meal is El Guero food cart. It’s located in downtown Ensenada near the harbor, just across the street from the plaza with the gigantic Mexican flag. There’s always a crowd of locals gathering around the cart, which is usually an indication of great food for cheap prices. There’s no structured method to the ordering, paying and eating. People gather around the cart on the street to eat and it’s hard to tell who’s coming and going. Don’t be shy – just jump in and ask who to order with.
The guys working the cart are a fury of shucking oysters, clams and mussels, as well as chopping fish, shrimp, scallops, sea urchin and octopus. Everything gets piled into a large cup for a seafood cocktail or on top of a tostada (you can always order a tostada with just one or two types of seafood, but we prefer to just have them pile it all on). The fish is fresh and the portions are large – seafood lovers, rejoice!
